KRELL LAUNCHES "RESOLUTION" LOUDSPEAKER SERIES
Las Vegas , NV -- Krell Industries, Inc., introduces a new lineup of high-performance loudspeaker systems at the 2003 International Consumer Electronics Show. The Resolution Series includes five models for high performance music systems as well as high performance home theater systems.
"The development of the Resolution series is a natural extension of our reference LAT series of loudspeakers," said Dan D'Agostino, Krell CEO and Chief Designer. "With the success of the LAT series, the market virtually demanded we expand our speaker offerings. The Resolution Series utilizes the same design principles and techniques that are the foundation of the LAT series. When combined with our Class A, KAV, or Showcase electronics, the Resolution speakers complete a system of stunning dynamics and musical involvement. I believe they are unique in their ability to provide extremely detailed, high-powered reproduction for both music and movie playback."
Cabinet Design
The Krell Resolution Series features robust MDF construction. The external enclosures are 1- inch in wall thickness and the baffles are constructed of a unique 2-inch thick sandwich that eliminates baffle resonance. Midrange drivers are isolated within internally braced sub-enclosures. The curvature of the cabinets is designed to completely minimize the effects of internal standing waves. Internal bracing is aligned asymmetrically to increase cabinet rigidity while further reducing internal resonant modes.
"Starting with the most rigid enclosure possible," Mr. D'Agostino explains, "insures the sound emanating from the speaker is only from the drivers. Any interaction from the cabinet distorts the music and diminishes the listener's involvement."
All models are available in either a black oak or figured sycamore real wood veneer.
High Performance Crossover Networks
All network components are mounted on 1/8-inch thick glass epoxy circuit boards with oversized 4-ounce copper traces. This design ensures superior linearity by minimizing circuit resistance and inductance. It also eliminates microphonics and assures high current handling capability. "Typical crossovers act as funnels," described Mr. D'Agostino. "Power delivered by the amplifier is choked off before it reaches the drivers. The breadth and dimension of the music is compressed by the crossover." Mr. D'Agostino continues, "Our experience in designing and manufacturing high power amplifiers is the underpinning of our crossover design. The crossovers behave as if they were extensions of our amplifiers, directing the power to the drivers unimpeded."
Network inductors are all air-core pure-copper designs; in the Resolution 1 the largest of these is formed of 10-gauge wire, measuring 5 inches in diameter. Multiple individually potted polypropylene capacitors are employed in parallel to minimize resistance and inductance while improving current handling.
In combination with the advanced drive units, the Resolution crossover networks are engineered to provide an extremely smooth impedance curve with high efficiency. They, therefore, present a predictable, nearly ideal load to the power amplifier...
Resolution 3
The smallest of the Resolution Series, the Resolution 3 is a 2-way monitor system based on the same engineering principles that distinguish the Krell Resolution concept.
The tweeter is identical to the unit used in the Resolution 1. The 8-inch (22cm) mid-bass drive unit is optimized for use in a two-way design where demands are placed on the low and midrange portions of the frequency spectrum. A polypropylene drive unit, this mid-bass driver features an oversized voice coil and magnet structure with a proprietary suspension design. This advanced driver design simultaneously ensures extraordinary bass reproduction and outstanding midrange accuracy.
The Resolution 3's vented cabinet features one rear bass port. As with the Resolution 1, it is precisely dimensioned, flared, and positioned with respect to the woofer to eliminate turbulence while providing the correct acoustic loading.
The Resolution 3 has a frequency response of 52-20,000 Hz. System sensitivity is 90dB SPL at 1 meter with 2.83V input. The cabinet measures approximately 11.3(w) x 16.0(h) x 14.0(d) inches...
Unprecedented Performance
"The Resolution series has benefited greatly from our design work on the LAT speakers." said Mr. D'Agostino. "Reference level design work always improves future products and the Resolution series is no exception. The acoustically inert low-diffraction cabinetry, the high-power low-distortion crossover network design, and the high-performance drivers add up to a unique listening experience. Put the Resolution speakers in a system with our music or home theater electronics, and you get sound that I can only describe as pure Krell--as explosive, delicate, and immediate as music itself."
